Microsoft expects Playstation 3 to be back in third place soon following their recent sales surge

In September, Sony's PlayStation 3 game console outsold its rivals in the United States for the first time, thanks to a slimmed-down price and size.

The PS3 took the top monthly spot with 491,800 units sold, more than Nintendo Wii (462,800 units) and Microsoft Xbox 360 (352,600 units), according to NPD Group. For more than a year, the Wii had reigned as the monthly sales champ.

Sony released the new PS3 Slim in mid-August, replacing the bulkier first PS3 incarnation and dropping the console's price from $400 to $300. Microsoft quickly followed suit, dropping Xbox 360 prices and phasing out the Pro model. And last month, Nintendo cut the Wii price to $200.

"We feel great about our numbers, and we expected Sony to have a great month," Xbox spokesman David Dennis said. "We expect it to be short-term and we expect them to be back down to third place soon like they've always been.

He said Xbox 360 is still the only console showing overall growth this year.

"Across all categories, the Xbox 360 platform contributed the most to industry unit and dollar sales as sales of 360 hardware, software and accessories comprised 32 percent of the month's revenues," NPD analyst Anita Frazier said in a statement.

Added comment from Microsoft

At this late stage of the game, given how the PS3 has been completely dominated by the Wii and XBox - and the XBox division became profitable for Microsoft - this battle is over and the PS3 is largely a disaster for Sony. Great, after a series of price cuts, and selling the units for a massive loss on each unit they are turning a profit selling slightly over priced Bluray players that also happen to play games.

Along the way the casual gaming market of the Wii and XBox Live ran them over and even their game developers, once the biggest asset to the PS3 community are getting restless because Sony is so hard to work with.

Lots of lessons to be learned, and wondering as all three platforms start to age, when does round three of this war begin (or does it - given the power of the hardware the PS3 and Xbox in particular have). The Wii has more headroom for development, but to what benefit?
